Within a decorated border a sixteenth century three-masted battleship of thirty guns; on the mainsail the coat of arms of Lord Howard of Effingham; flags flying, waves below. Legend: "SIGIL.D.CAROLI.HOWARD.BARON.DE.EFFINGHAM.PRAECLARI.ORDINIS.GARTERII.MILITIS.MAGNI.ADMIRALLI.ANGLIAE.ET.CET.Ao1585". Reverse: above, the burgee of the club, an anchor (L&R). Space below for recipient's name and award. Legend: "THE ROYAL CRUISING CLUB, MEDAL FOR SEAMANSHIP". The design on the obverse is taken from Lord Howard's seal, a cast of which is in the Museum.
