Tile

Plain white glazed tile, the front painted over the glaze in watercolour with three ships in the ice, four boats and figures. The reverse is ridged. On reverse the inscription in ink: 'H.M.S. Resolute 1852'. The image is based on a chromolithograph 'Situation of H.M.S. 'Resolute' in Baffin's Bay' by M. & N. Hanhart after G. F. McDougall, used as an illustration in George F. McDougall's book 'The eventful voyage of HMS discovery ship Resolute...' (London, 1857).
