Cup

Loving cup with two handles, transfer-printed in bluish-black and coloured in pink, green, yellow, red and blue. It stands on a circular foot. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships on the horizon behind him. The portrait is flanked by trophies surrounded by floral wreaths. Around it is the inscription 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY', 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON', 'Copenhagen Nile 1798', 'Trafalgar 1805'. Above the portrait, within a laurel wreath is the verse 'Shew me my Country's Foes,/The Hero cry'd,/He saw-He faught-He conquer'd,/And he di'd.' This is continued below 'Dear to his Country,/shall his Mem'ry live;/But sorrow drowns the Joy,/His Deeds should give.' On the other side, a caricature of a gentleman riding a velocipede, running into a bystander with two small figures in the background inscribed 'Dandy Horsemanship'. Other caricatures of figures are placed inside the cup and there is vine decoration on the foot.
