Jug

Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in brown with ochre painted rims. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He fought, He conquer'd, he di'd.' On the other side, a naval action, 'VICTORY' above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, below a naval trophy: 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE-ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE./Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Mer[it] and Knight of/the imperial Or[der] of the Cresce[nt]', 'Copenhagen', 'N[ile]', 'Trafalgar'. The transfers have been cut to fit the shape of the jug. A scrolling floral border with trophies of arms runs round the neck with a laurel band on the inside, and the jug has a mottled brown handle.
