Herring girls, Scarborough, Yorkshire
The women in this photograph are probably knitting ‘Ganseys’ or ‘Guernseys’, a traditional type of woollen jumper worn by fishermen. The photograph was probably taken in Scarborough’s harbour which is located next to the popular tourist beach in the town’s South Bay.
