Parasol

The ceremonial parasol or canopy said to be that of Huang Kaiguang, the Regional Commander of Qiongzhou captured by boats from HMS 'Hornet', Captain Charles Codrington Forsyth during the battle of Fatshan Creek, 1st June 1857. The canopy is cylinder-shaped with a circular upper section of faded red celulose fibre fabric, surmounted by a collar to fit round a pole. Round the edge there are three red satin flounces with a silk fringe round the lowest edge. The flounces are embroidered in blue, white and gold satin stitch with flowers and fish (paired fish and carp). The stems and fishes' bodies are embroidered in counched gold thread made of gilded paper wrapped round a silk core. There is a brocade silk ribbon attached to the lower edge of each tier. A looped white silk streamer with coloured embroidery is attached to the side of the canopy. The parasol was presented to Greenwich Hospital by Queen Victoria in 1858 as the parasol of 'Admiral Wang'.

According to the Da Qing Huidian (Collected Statutes of the Great Qing), the parasol used by regional commanders was similar to that of Provincial Military Commanders (tidu rank 1b) and was yellow in colour. Red parasols were used by the aristocracy. Another possibility, is that the parasol was taken from a temple which would have been furnished with these items. They were also carried in religious processions.
