Full hull model; Rigged model; Oar

Oar from a full hull model of a cutter (powered pleasure craft). Model is decked and equipped.

Undetermined scale. At first glance this appears to be a somewhat plainly made model until one realizes that it was made by schoolboys from Greenwich Hospital School. At the time it was made, in 1914, the School occupied the suite of buildings that now make up the National Maritime Museum. The School taught boys all aspects of seamanship, navigation, shipbuilding and associated subjects and skills. The model has been very competently carved and painted from a solid block of wood and fittings – seats, backboard, thwarts, and so on – have been applied. It is equipped with a set of oars, mast, boathook, ensign staff, rudder and yoke.
