A British Union Flag (post-1801 pattern). It is hand-sewn in cotton duck with a blue hoist. Accompanying it is a hand-written note: 'This flag was made by R.I.M. Lascars for the R.I.M. Transport Depart. at the Boxer Trouble - China before the official issue of flags has arrived'. The flag was said by the donor to have flown over the Summer Palace in Beijing after its capture by international forces on 16 August 1900. It was sent home by the donor's father, Lieutenant S.D. Vale of the Royal Indian Marine, who received the Third China War medal with a bar for the relief of Pekin.
