Figure

Double-sided earthenware figure of a French soldier and British sailor, allies during the Crimean War. Both figures stand, holding a red banner, wearing blue coats and white trousers. The French soldier has a black, peaked shako, the sailor a straw hat. The sailor's banner has a blue square at the hoist and he has an anchor beside him. The soldier is accompanied by a pile of shot. The figure is decorated in overglaze enamel colours with the details picked out in gilt. It stands on a white enclosed oval base with a gold line painted around it.
