Buckley, HMS Venerable, Superb, Emperor of India, 1914-1920

A green cloth covered album with b/w photographs, some captioned.

The photographs in this album relate to Buckley’s wartime service. He was active during the Gallipoli campaign 1915 and there are photographs of the ships involved, ambulances, trenches and Turkish prisoners. He later served in HMS Emperor of India (1913) engaged in the allied intervention against the Bolsheviks in the Black Sea and the Crimea, 1919-1921. There are images of Sebastopol, Yalta, Odessa and Constantinople and of the rescue of Russian refugees from Novorossisk in 1920.. Ships represented include HMS Ramillies (1916), HMS Benbow (1913), HMS Emperor of India (1913) as well as Kaiser class battleships. Ships’ officers are also included but unfortunately many have not been identified. Finally there are photographs of some charming ships’ pets. During World War I, Buckley served in HMS Venerable (1899) from January 1914 until December 1916, the gunnery school HMS Excellent and HMS Superb (1907), January and February 1917. From September 1917-19 he served in HMS Emperor of India (1913).

For a summary of Buckley’s career see ALB1511. The museum’s manuscript department holds Buckley’s war diaries.
