Patch box

Oval patch box with a mirror inside the lid, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) and the battle of the Nile, 1798. The surface is enamelled, the base white, sides royal blue, the lid is painted with a coloured picture of a naval battle, one ship on fire. The scene has a border of white dots and the inscription 'L'Orient on Fire in the Glorious Victory by Adm NELSON', '1st August 1798'.
