Patch box

Oval patch box with a mirror inside the lid, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The surface is enamelled, the base and sides green, the lid with a tinted transfer depicting a winged figure, seated on a cloud holding an oval portrait of George III. She protects it with a shield held in the other hand which has an arrow embedded in it. The lid is surrounded by a leaf border and is inscribed 'God save the King', 'May no weapon form'd against him prosper'. A plot to assassinate the king was discovered in 1802.
