Fan
A paper fan painted in watercolour with a depiction of the battle of Dogger Bank, 1781. This is flanked by two oval vignettes showing on the left a bearded merman blowing a conch and waving a Dutch flag inscribed: 'ZOUTMAN', on the right a disconsolate mermaid, tearing her hair and holding a lowered red flag inscribed: 'PARKER'. The white background is painted with sprigs of flowers and foliage. The sticks are made of mother-of-pearl, painted and inlaid with gilt metal. They are secured by a metal pin terminating in a paste gem.
