Bamboo cane
Bamboo cane belonging to Paymaster Captain Leonard Richard Barker RN (1881-1971). It has a rounded head carved with the front and rear view of a mouse, a bunch of grapes below. The cane has an inscription in Japanese. Barker’s service record notes: 'Passed prelim. Japanese for interpreter 24.2.1909.' He had served in HMS 'Albion' on the China Station in 1904.
