The base of one of the whale jaw bone posts on Yttygran Island
A close up of the base of one of the vertical bowhead whale jaw bone posts. The jaw bone has broken off near to the base, but it does show how the stones embedded in the soil around it support the rib in its upright position. The right edge of the image is partially obscured by a blurred image of a finger(?).
This was the first island visited by the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) and Ivy Sharp records that they arrived at about 0700. The weather was foggy, which turned to drizzle and then rain. They left at about 1120 as the weather deteriorated.
