Two whale skulls edging a rectangular pit on Yttygran Island
Two bowhead whale skulls set into the ground around a rectangular pit on Yttygran Island. The pit is purpose made, although its function is not clear. Some of the pits on the site are believed to have been used to store meat.
This was the first island visited by the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) and Ivy Sharp records that they arrived at about 0700. The weather was foggy, which turned to drizzle and then rain. They left at about 1120 as the weather deteriorated.
