A view along the port side deck from the cabin window of the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975). Two passengers in their red jackets are leaning over the side of the ship loking at the large sheets of pack ice passing by. The lower halves of Lifeboat Numbers 4 and 2 can be seen in the top left of the image.
On 25 July the ice breaker sailed though the Beaufort Sea, passing pack ice. Ivy Sharp spent time watching the ice: 'The icebreaker is very interesting to watch. It has a rounded hull and as it approaches the pack ice it either pushes to aside, if sufficiently fragile or there is water around where it can be pushed or else climb on the ice and slowly crunch forward.'
