Square section of oak

A piece of oak, square in section, cut from the centre of the tree trunk, with a brass label inscribed: 1174 PIECE OF OAK FROM AN ENGLISH SHIP SUNK IN THE HARBOUR OF CALAIS BY THE FRENCH FLEET UNDER THE DUKE OF GUISE 1588. GIVEN BY R.W. POWELL ESQ.' This may refer to the capture in 1558 of Calais - the last English possession in France, by Francis, Duke of Guise.
