In 1700 a complicated legal case involving a vessel called the 'Ouzel Galley' in the Port of London was referred to arbitration by merchants. They came swiftly to a good decision and on the basis of this example a society of Dublin merchants was formed to arbitrate in commercial disputes. The costs decreed against the parties involved were paid to charity.
