Passenger/cargo vessel(1850-60); Paddle steamer

Scale: Unknown. A contemporary full hull block model of a paddle steamer (1850-60) mounted on its original wooden baseboard. The shallow-draught hull has a raking curved bow and cruiser stern and is finished in a creamy white above the waterline, with a green underside to possibly indicate copper sheathing. The decoration consists of a decorative rope moulding around the topsides whilst on the bow, stern and paddle boxes are plumes of feathers in the form of a North American headdress. On deck is a funnel and positions for two masts with the intricate stanchions and rails painted on the solid. There is passenger accommodation below in saloons either side of the central paddles which would suggest that this vessel was designed to operate on both river and coastal voyages where protection from the weather was needed.
