Hampton Court (1744); Warship; Third rate; 70-guns

Scale: 1:48. A block design model of the ‘Hampton Court’ (1744), a 70-gun, two-decker ship of the line.

The ‘Hampton Court’ was built to the 1741 Establishment. Although ships of this size were originally classed as 70-gunners, they were soon re-classed as 64-gunners. The ‘Hampton Court’ was 154 feet by 44 feet and weighed 1291 tons and 480 men served on board. Launched at Deptford in 1744, it carried twenty-six 32-pound guns on its gun deck, twenty-six 18-pounders on the upper deck, ten 9-pounders on the quarterdeck, and two 9-pounders on the forecastle.

It was in service for 30 years, firstly as part of Balchen’s fleet and then in the Western Squadron when it captured the ‘Lys’, a 32-gun privateer. It was part of Warren’s fleet from 1748–57, including being sent to reinforce Byng. Lord Augustus Hervey captained the ‘Hampton Court’ in the Mediterranean in 1757–58. In 1762 it was sent to the West Indies and took part in the operations at Havana that year. It was broken up at Plymouth in 1774.
