Launching casket
Launching casket of HMS 'Royal Alfred' 1864. A wooden box with a plaque on the lid inscribed: 'Royal Alfred 35 guns'. Inside the lid is a glazed picture of the ship and details of the vessel as follows: 'Royal Alfred, armour plated screw frigate. Principal dimensions - length between the perpendiculars 273' 0", length of keel for tonnage 232' 81/2". Breadth extreme 58' 7". Breadth for tonnage 57' 4", moulded 56' 6". Depth in hold 19' 10". Engines of 800 H.P. by Maudeslay, Son & Field. Named and launched by Mrs Alice Cradock at H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth on Saturday 15th day of October 1864 H. Cradock master shipwright'. The box is lined with velvet.
