Asia (1865); Passenger vessel

Scale: 1:48. A model of the starboard side of the Asia (1865) made entirely in wood with metal fittings and partly painted. The hull is carved from wood, the lower half of which is laminated revealing different cross-grains, the effect simulating stylised planking. The hull below the waterline is varnished or polished, and painted black above, with an unpainted strake running the entire length of the hull. A single row of portholes is painted on the black portion of hull. There is carved decoration at the bow and scroll figurehead. The decks are varnished wood, scored to resemble planking. The foredeck fittings include truncated bowsprit, rail, cathead and capstan. The main deck extends to the stern and fittings include two long rectangular deck houses, ventilators, single truncated black-painted funnel, skylight, and a raised deck accessed by a companion way. The ventilators have unusual squared-shaped openings, their inner faces painted red. The model is displayed in its original mahogany-framed display case, glazed on three sides and top, and with turned pillar supports. On label attached to backboard "Model of the........steamship "Asia" Length of the Keel 8 Fore Rake 264FT. Oin. Breadth of Beam 34.0 Depth Moulded 26FT. Oin. Tonnage BM 1500. Nom. IP 250.
