Midship model; Frame model

Scale: Unknown. A model of a midship section of an iron vessel showing the position and setting of the lower portion of a wooden mast made entirely of wood and painted in realistic colours. The lower portion of the hull is painted a copper colour to indicate sheathing to the waterline, above which is a thick white followed by a thick black horizontal band. On the underside from the turn of the bilge to the keel, the iron strakes overlap and are similar to a clinker construction. Internally the hull consists of 26 simulated metal frames on which is mounted a keelson and various iron girder shaped riders, together with a rectangular box section either side of the keelson on which the mast has been stepped. At the top of the model are four deck beams, two immediately either side of the mast, all of which are supported within a pair of deck beam shelves and spirketting. There is a square wooden platform bridging two deck beams through which the wooden section of the mast passes through. The mast itself is circular in section and has been trucated by a series of V-shaped cuts whilst at the bottom it has been rounded off and sits in a metal framework complete with three horizontal hoops and two vertical uprights, all of which taper into a circular metal pillar, the lower end of which is stepped into the keelson. The whole model is moutned on a pair of turned circular pillars along the keel, toghether with four tall brass rods screwed to the model just above the waterline, all of which are secured to a square polished mahogany baseboard with moulded edges and bun feet underneath each corner.
