Topographical model; Dry dock model

Scale: 1:96. A model of a dry dock complete with a working set of gates, circa 1830.. The main bulk of the model showing the structure and brickwork construction is finished in a creamy white colour with the various blocks of stones and paving picked out in black ink. The floor of the dock together with the curved working doors are painted a dark grey colour. The model is carved from a solid piece of wood and is rectangular in shape finishing in a half hexagonal shape at the head of the dock. The model includes a series of inclining steps running down to the dock itself. The dock also shows a series of horizontal steps (also known as altars) running around the contour of the dock broken up by a series of flat inclined slides. Around the edge of the dock and below the upper paving and steps are a series of vertical recesses for securing timber slides used to support the hull of the ship when the water has been pumped out. The area outside the dock gates is curved in both the horizontal and vertical plane with the vertical recess area providing storage for the gates when open.

Plaque inscribed "Model of a dock (on 1.8 scale) shewing altars, timber slides, steps, gates, & C.".
