cat-o'-nine-tails

Cat-o'-nine-tails. Wooden handle covered with faded red baize sewn with twine. Band of twine around the middle and knotting at each end. Nine lashes fitted into grooves in the wooden handle. Red yarn laid up into each lash (distinguishing colour for Portsmouth Dockyard rope). No knots. Belonged to Lt. J.G. Haggard (1850-1908). MS86/081 (1878 letter to his mother from Ascension Island) mentions the order to flog a marine by the captain of the island, an order subsequently retracted.
