Naval telescope

This achromatic telescope has a tapering mahogany barrel and a single brass draw tube. The brass fittings include sliding eyepiece and objective lens covers. An inscription on the draw tube reads 'This Glass was saved Anno / Domino [sic] Octr 23 1806 from the Brig Sophia of London, in the bosom of Mr Thomas Simson, & is kept by him to commemorate the loss of the said vessel on the South East Extremity of the Dogger Bank'.
