Sailor's neckerchief

Sailor's neckerchief printed with nautical information. It has a blue border and a compass rose in the centre, inside a lifebelt with a crown and anchor behind. These handkerchiefs were issued to new entrants to the Royal Navy as late as 1899 and used to make the sailor's traditional bundle. They went out of the seaman's kit when the instructions became obsolete and blue bundle handkerchiefs were issued instead. The design was patented by Lieutenant Colonel K. Fulton of the Durham Light Infantry.
