Button, Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1787-1895

This large, flat brass button engraved with the foul anchor motif was worn by warrant officer's between 1787 and 1860. Although uniform regulations were introduced in 1748, it was not until 1787 that the warrant officer was given an official uniform. The rank of warrant officer included the master, surgeon and purser as well as the gunner, boatswain and carpenter.
