Hanger

German hanger, the hilt of the hanger is made in one piece and consists of a solid brass knuckle-bow which leads to a small upturned quillon with a swollen terminal, a domed pommel, a smooth back-piece running in a continuous line with the knuckle-bow, and an evenly straight horizontal brass grip, which is shaped to fit the hand. The steel blade is a slightly curved, with a flat back with a slight suggestion of a short false edge. The blade is made in the form of a wedge-shaped section without grooves. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a depiction of a human head wearing a crown and a plumed helmet mark above the letters 'W K & C.' at the shoulder. These letters refer to the firm of Weyersberg, Kirschbeum and Company and it bears the joint mark of the two makers, which was in use from 1883. The black leather scabbard is decorated with twin lines of longitudinal blind tooling. The scabbard has a brass top locket with a long frog hook and a brass chape with a prominent button instead of a shoe. The leather is sewn down the reverse side and the brass parts are fixed to it with small brass staples.

The hanger is made in a style that was popular in Europe the 19th century; this style of hanger was used in Germany, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Turkey. The police used a variant of this style of hanger in the 1960's in Italy. The hanger strongly resembles the 1815 pattern of the British Foot Artillery sword and also the French Infantry hanger made in 1802-1803.
