Astronomy Photographer of the Year is the biggest international competition of its kind, showcasing spectacular images shot by astrophotographers worldwide. Royal Museums Greenwich organises the competition through the Royal Observatory Greenwich and displays 100 images in an annual exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

The exhibition is laid out in four zones. Visitors move deeper into space as they explore the exhibition – seeing the marvels of the universe and hearing from the astrophotographers themselves via interactive audio-visual displays.

The latest competition winners are currently on display in London and will be available to tour for exhibitions from the first of April 2026. Combining art and science into one, the exhibition is appropriate for science museums, art galleries, discovery centres, and planetarium galleries of all types. It is scalable from just 31 images to 100, so we can help you format the exhibition to fit almost any space.

The exhibition is available to tour as an all-digital package. This significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the exhibition, as prints are produced in the host nation, and allows hosting organisations to use their preferred local suppliers. It also enables us to tour to many venues simultaneously and respond to new touring partnerships at very short notice. We can arrange for printing in the UK and shipping abroad if given sufficient notice, but this will incur additional costs.

The touring package consists of:

  • 100 images with interpretation, 31 of these images are ‘must display’, the rest are optional

    - Interpretation includes text from our entrants, judges, and in-house astronomers at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. All content has been reviewed by our curatorial and editorial team for consistency and accessibility.

    - There are 40 shortlisted images that are not adapted for exhibit and so are not included. If one or more of these is of particular interest to your audiences, we can produce interpretation and license the image for you at no extra charge as part of the localisation support we offer.

  • Higher level interpretation, including intro and outros for the exhibition and introductions to the categories

    - Three short films for display, each offering a deeper insight into one of the images.

    - This year they are filmed in the UK, Italy, and Japan.

    - Featuring themes of travel, tradition and modernity, children and education, and STEM learning.

    - Delivered with BSL and English subtitles if required.

  • Artwork for all logos for Royal Museums Greenwich, Astronomy Photographer of the Year, and each category

  • Regional exclusivity is to be negotiated, but our intention is to always ensure your venue is the only host for Astronomy Photographer of the Year in your region

We charge a £1,000.00 initiation fee to cover staff costs in arranging your contract and providing support and advice on how to pitch, market, promote, and exhibit Astronomy Photographer of the Year. In exceptional cases, this fee may be waived or reduced, but this is not guaranteed and only applicable to exhibitions lasting greater than four months.

We will also help you promote the exhibition and provide ongoing assistance to make complying with brand and marketing requirements as easy as possible. Our expert media and marketing teams will provide guidance on how to refer to the project in the media, as well as tips on what we know works well from over a decade of experience promoting Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

We offer localisation support in the form of additional interpretation if needed and can help put you in touch with astrophotographers and astronomers in your area. We are not able to offer translation services, and these would need to be undertaken by the host organisation.
