What is Unboxing the Universe?
Unboxing the Universe is a multi-sensory live science show that turns big space questions into exciting moments of discovery and wonder.
Packed with awesome live demos from Royal Observatory astronomers, weird and wonderful smells, and hands-on audience participation, Unboxing the Universe is bursting with answers to your biggest space questions, like:
- What is a black hole?
- What does our Solar System smell like?
- Is it possible to beat the speed of light?
- What does it take to launch a rocket into space?
This exciting science theatre show will spark wonder in kids and adults alike. It’s the perfect experience for anyone who has ever looked up into the night sky and wondered what’s out there.
As part of the show, you can also ask our experts any burning questions you may have about the Universe!
Please see this page for general access information about the National Maritime Museum.
Access: Frequently Asked Questions
Is this wheelchair accessible?
Unboxing the Universe is wheelchair accessible via two lifts. We need to know the number of wheelchair users, so please book a wheelchair ticket if you are using a wheelchair on the day. The lifts in use in the space have weight and dimension limits. Please contact bookings@rmg.co.uk for further information if needed.
Can I bring my family?
Yes you can! We ask for no large groups (10+) to ensure a quieter environment.
Is it just for children?
This event is aimed at a family audience but is layered to satisfy even the biggest space fans. If you’re interested in a similar event for an adult only audience please email bookings@rmg.co.uk
Can I eat in the show?
Please eat in one of the Museum's dedicated picnic areas, or Greenwich Park, rather than inside Unboxing the Universe.
Can I leave and come back?
Yes, you can leave as often as you need to.
How long is the show?
We will be slowing the pace of the show to ensure everyone is comfortable, and we expect the duration to be around 1 hour.
What happens if we are late?
A staff member will be present outside the show to scan your ticket and brief you before you enter, but then you can enter during the performance and enjoy the show!
Do I need to show proof of diagnosis?
No, no staff members at Royal Museums Greenwich will ask about visitors’ diagnoses. If this event would suit your child, you’re welcome to attend.
Can I make noise during the show?
Yes, we welcome audience members to express themselves however they like.
Are there any flashing lights in the show?
This show contains colourful lights and moving lights. It does not contain strobe lights or any flashing lights.
Is there any provision for blind or partially sighted audience members?
There is a hard copy of the presentation used in the show which can be used by audience members to look at images close-up.
If requested, certain props can be touched or handled before or after the show by blind or partially sighted audience members.
Is there BSL interpretation available?
There is no BSL interpretation available as standard.
However, if a group with an interpreter would like to visit the show please contact bookings@rmg.co.uk to discuss how we can support your visit.
Are there captions available?
Automated captioning via a small side screen is available on request.
Unfortunately, we're aware that automated captioning doesn't always capture specialised astronomy terms accurately. A copy of the script can be made available on the day if requested in advance, and we'd recommend using this alongside the captioning.
Do I have to queue?
The Lecture Theatre will open at least 20 minutes before the show starts, and audience members can enter and settle at a pace comfortable for them. A member of staff will need to scan your ticket, but there is no need to queue.
