Please note

This event is exclusive for our Members and is recommended for ages 16+. The event will take place at Mycenae House, 90 Mycenae Rd, London SE3 7SE.

The Flamsteed Astronomy Society (FAS) has previously hosted two sketching workshops and has decided to take it up a notch to create astronomy art using mixed mediums.

Astronomy and art have had a long relationship going back to ancient civilizations, where the medium of art was used to interpret the objects and patterns of the heavens. This is our opportunity to put away those cameras and let loose our creative side to create our own unique interpretations of the night sky.

Don’t worry if you have never done any paintings or drawings before, as this is for complete beginners.

What you can expect

We will use a range of art mediums including pencils, oil pastels, wax crayons and charcoal to produce an art piece of the night sky. Members will go through the process of drawing the scene, adding and blending dark and light colours and adding finishing details. All materials will be provided and you do not need to prepare anything beforehand. The art teacher will provide step-by-step instructions and will develop artworks with the class.

Who should attend?

This event is exclusive to our Members and is perfect for beginners and anyone interested in getting started with astronomy art. In addition to learning a new skill set, art brings us closer to the target objects and allows us to focus on more details, colours, textures and patterns compared to looking at a photograph.

About the artist

Lee Nightingale is a self-taught artist from Sidcup. She is a member of numerous art groups where she regularly teaches and promotes art. She has exhibited in several galleries including the Marwell Wildlife Society and has won consecutive prizes for best wildlife portraits.

Lee currently runs a number of art classes in the Sidcup area and has had numerous commissions for pet and wildlife portraits. She specialises in pastel and graphite and runs classes on all painting mediums.
