A sperm whale tooth engraved with a seated figure representing Britannia. Below, a sailor is shown parting from his girl. On the other side, is a warship and a lighthouse flanked with a star and a sailor carrying a bundle on a stick over his shoulder. A whaling scene is placed above, beneath the Masonic symbols of clasped hands and a rayed eye.

From sketch to stitch, sailors have always used their time at sea to make things.

This behind-the-scenes tour of the stores will delve deeper into the history of sailors' craftwork, from the eighteenth century to the twentieth.

Led by Maya Wassell-Smith, Assistant Curator of Art, we will explore the most common craft activities, from carving scrimshaw, through embroidering woolworks, to making model ships in bottles, as well as some more unusual art projects.

While looking at objects made by sailors, you will learn how men used their craftwork skills: for loved ones, for earning a bit of money or for making their lives at sea more comfortable.
