Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) will welcome in the Lunar New Year with a day of celebration on Saturday 13 February 2027 for around 16,000 visitors at the National Maritime Museum (NMM).
There will be an exciting programme to suit all ages and interests, from family-friendly workshops, museum objects connected with East and Southeast Asia, talks, and live performances.
In this role, the Lead Facilitator will plan and deliver weekly evening workshops as part of our Young Producers programme. Taking place bi-weekly in the run-up to the festival, you’ll guide 20 young people aged 16-25 to plan and run part of the Museum’s festival programme. You, with the support of a Youth Assistant Facilitator, will work with them to develop a trail, tour, performance, workshop, or something else, which amplifies and engages youth voices, to be delivered as part of the day’s events.
The Lead Facilitator will work closely with the young people to create a comfortable and welcoming space by ensuring their lived experiences are valued and respected, encouraging collaboration and social connection. With support from the RMG engagement team, you will plan and deliver 10 weekly sessions and manage a budget of around £4,000 to support young people in bringing their idea to life – from concept, to promotion, liaising with artists/performers/community partners, as needed, and delivery.
You will be supported to deliver this Young Producer series through:
- Delivering alongside an Assistant Facilitator
- Access/guidance on researching RMG object stores, objects and staff with collections experience
- Guidance from RMG Event/Project Managers, working to programme and deliver the festival
- Receiving regular support on all areas of planning and delivery from the RMG’s Youth Programme Producer and, where possible, Senior Manager: Partnerships and Public Engagement
You will lead on workshop planning and delivery, including on the festival day itself. Duties include:
- Planning and designing sessions to guide Young Producers in co-producing an outcome (trail, tour, performance, workshop, etc.) for a museum-wide festival day, exploring different lived experiences and cultural perspectives of Lunar New Year.
- Ensuring outcomes/activities are culturally sensitive, suitable for all ages (ideally targeted/with focus on ages 16-25), and deliverable on time and within budget.
- Researching and suggesting potential venues or cultural experiences for an offsite visit (with the Youth Programmes Producer, who will manage logistics) and supporting the trip on the day.
- Workshop room, furniture, and material set-up and take-down.
- Working with the Assistant to manage participant registration and safe sign-in/release of young people and liaising with parents/guardians.
- Planning suitable, engaging workshops and working directly with young people to help them participate and build positive peer relationships.
- Troubleshooting late arrivals, plans not going as expected, or content not landing with the group – able to work flexibly and in a child-centered or youth-led way.
- Identifying and responding to safeguarding disclosures and concerns.
- Providing (or supporting the Assistant to provide) individualised support for different learning styles and accessibility needs.
- Sign post young people to other organisations for further opportunities or support during and when the programme.
- Sharing feedback and reflections with the Youth Programme Producer to help shape and improve the programme.
- Asking for help when unsure or proactively seeking tasks to delegate and handover to the Youth Programme Producer.
Lunar New Year celebrations at the National Maritime Museum are community-led, by creatives of East and Southeast Asian heritage. We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with a personal, cultural, or community connection to Lunar New Year.
