Notebook containing a journal kept by Jane Letitia Trowbridge Bruce, daughter of Rear-Admiral Henry W. Bruce, between 1 April 1851 and 11 October 1853.
The journal starts at the Bruce family estate at Ballyscullion in Ireland and then covers a voyage from Spithead to Africa on the paddle frigate HMS PENELOPE (1843). It records events during her father’s appointment as Commander-in-Chief on the west coast of Africa station, including the attack on Lagos by the British squadron on 26 December 1851. There are also references to her romance with John Richard Alexander, a lieutenant on the PENELOPE. Bruce and Alexander were married at Sierra Leone on 15 December 1853, see the journal AXR/104/2.
