Journal kept by Jane Letitia Trowbridge Alexander, 1853-1862.

Journal kept by Jane Letitia Trowbridge Alexander between 15 December 1851 and 1 February 1862. It begins on the date of her marriage to Lieutenant John Richard Alexander at Freetown, Sierra Leone, and goes on to cover their voyage on HMS PENELOPE (1843) to Portsmouth, completed on 16 March 1854.

Her husband then briefly served on HMS IMPREGNABLE (1810), flagship of Admiral Sir William Parker at Devonport, before becoming flag lieutenant to her father Vice-Admiral Bruce on HMS PRESIDENT (1829) and then HMS MONARCH (1832) on the Pacific station. Both officers departed from Liverpool on the Cunard steamer AMERICA (1848) on 9 December 1854.

The journal covers travels later made by Jane Bruce, including two trips to Paris in 1855 and a voyage to South America, reaching her husband and father at Valparaiso on 11 August 1856. She was with them on the MONARCH during the voyage home from the Pacific, reaching Spithead on 26 May 1858. From this point onwards the journal entries become irregular and brief.
