(3) Certificate of being rated as a midshipman, dated 30 October 1902. (4) Typescript engine room and steam certificate issued to Bedford as a midshipman on the cruiser HMS ARIADNE (1898) at Portland, signed by William H. Wood, Engineer Commander, approved by Captain Archibald G.H.W. Moore, dated 3 July 1905. (5) Typescript certificate of training in gunnery and torpedoes issued to Bedford as a midshipman on the battleship HMS EXMOUTH (1901), signed by Frederick C. Dreyer, Gunnery Lieutenant, and Frederick N. Fargus, Torpedo Lieutenant, approved by Captain Edward E. Bradford, dated 1905. (6) Certificate of competency in steam, issued while a midshipman on the battleship HMS EXMOUTH (1901), dated 18 November 1905. (7) Certificate of promotion to the rank of acting sub-lieutenant after serving five months on HMS EXMOUTH (1901), signed by Admiral Arthur K. Wilson, commander-in-chief, Channel Fleet, dated 31 December 1905. (8) Form of passing in seamanship (incorporating six first class certificates) for promotion to the rank of lieutenant, dated 12 April 1907. (9 Admiralty commission as sub-lieutenant, dated 29 May 1907. (10) Printed certificate of qualification for Lieutenant G. and G. issued to Bedford on the completion of courses in gunnery at Portsmouth and Greenwich. Signed by Captain Frederick C.T.
