Papers relating to events at Wuhu in December 1937, during Ryan’s service as a surgeon lieutenant with the Yangtze Flotilla in China:

(1) Typescript account by Ryan of events between 5 and 18 December 1937, during which HMS LADYBIRD (1916) was shelled by Japanese artillery at Wuhu and USS PANAY (1927) was bombed and sunk by Japanese aircraft near Nanking (Nanjing).
(2) Notes and sketches in pencil recording the experiences of Ward Room Petty Officer Steward Ah Yueng Kaig during the same events at Wuhu.
(3) Memorandum for the commanding officers of HMS BEE (1915) and USS OAHU (1927) regarding the embarkation of survivors from the PANAY, dated 14 December 1937.
(4) Copy of a letter from the managers of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, thanking Lieutenant-Commander Harry D. Barlow and the crew of the LADYBIRD for their services in protecting merchant vessels at Wuhu, dated 24 December 1937.
(5) A cutting from the 12 December 1957 issue of the ‘Boston Herald’ newspaper relating to the sinking of the PANAY.
