Horatio Lord Nelson / Brian Lavery.
A concise biography of Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) covering key events and influences during his life and career. Going to sea at the age of 12 under the patronage of his uncle, Maurice Suckling, a naval captain, Nelson rose quickly through the ranks from midshipman to lieutenant in 1777, commander in 1778 and captain in 1779. Appointed as commodore in 1795, he was promoted to rear-admiral in 1797 and vice-admiral in 1801, and died at the Battle of Trafalgar while in command of the Mediterranean Fleet in HMS Victory. His naval career and campaigns such as the Battle of St Vincent, the Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar are set against the context of his personal life and relationships with his wife Frances and Emma Hamilton to explain his growing reputation and fame. Illustrated throughout.
