Horatia Nelson / Winifred Gâerin.
A biography of Horatia Nelson Thompson (1801-1881), the daughter of Emma Hamilton and Horatio Nelson. To avoid scandal, she was baptized Horatia Nelson Thompson but the circumstances of her birth and parentage were the subject of speculation, confusion and subterfuge. Nelson referred to her as his adopted daughter and provided for her in his will but her mother's identity remained a closely guarded secret. After Nelson's death, Horatia continued to live with Emma Hamilton until the latter's death in Calais. Horatia returned to England where she lived with first one of Nelson's brothers-in-law, George Matcham and then another, Thomas Bolton. She married the Rev. Philip Ward in 1822 and had ten children. The appendices include a copy of Horatia's will, and family trees of the Bolton, Matcham and Ward families. A bibliography is provided.

Nelson's band of brothers : lives and memorials /Peter Hore.
Nelson gave the name 'band of brothers' to the officers who had commanded ships of his fleet at the battle of the Nile in 1798. This work provides biographical summaries of all those officers who had commanded ships or squadrons in Nelson's fleet fighting under his tactical control at the battles of the Nile (1798), Copenhagen (1801) and Trafalgar (1805). Location details and photographs are also provided of the memorials to these men, and the work is illustrated throughout with photographic plates.

The great Anglo-Russian naval alliance of the eighteenth century and beyond / Philip MacDougall.
"Naval co-operation between Britain and Russia continued throughout the eighteenth century, with Britain providing huge assistance to the growth of Russia's navy, and Russia making an essential but often overlooked contribution to Britain's maritime power in the period. From 1698 when Tsar Peter the Great served briefly as a trainee shipwright at Deptford dockyard Russia recruited British, often Scottish, shipwrights, engineers, naval officers and naval surgeons who both helped build up the Russian navy and who were also key advisers to the Russian navy at sea. At the same time, naval stores from Russia, especially after Britain lost the American colonies, were vital for the maintenance of Britain's fleet. Moreover, as this book argues, Russian naval power was much more formidable than is often realised, with the Russian navy active alongside the British fleet in the North Sea and winning decisive battles against the Ottoman navy in the Mediterranean, including the battles of ðCeðsme in 1770 and Navarino in 1827. Britain did well to have Russia as a naval ally rather than an enemy. This book provides a comprehensive overview of this important subject, at a time when Britain's relationship with Russia is of considerable concern."--Provided by the publisher.
