Reappraisals of British colonisation in Atlantic Canada, 1700-1930 / edited by S. Karly Kehoe and Michael E. Vance.
"Investigates the contested legacies of British colonisation on Canada's Atlantic coast. Engages with the legacy of British colonisation in Atlantic Canada across three sections. Situates the Scottish experience within process of British colonisation, challenging the tendency to omit the Scots from critical explorations of the colonisation process in this region. Exposes the reader to a range of experiences from across the four Atlantic Provinces, which will encourage more exciting new research. Chapters are grouped in three main sections: Dispossession and Settlement; Religion and Identity; Reappraising Memory. This collection offers new perspectives on the legacy of British colonisation by concentrating on Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island), a region that was pivotal to safeguarding Britain's imperial ambitions, between 1750 and 1930. New and established researchers from Canada, Scotland and the United States engage with the core themes of migration, dispossession, religion, identity, and commemoration in a way that diverges markedly from existing scholarship. The research shines much-needed light on groups traditionally excluded from Britain's broader imperial narrative, highlighting the indigenous experience and the presence and agency of slaves, free people of colour and religious minorities"--Provided by the publisher.

Embroidered Georgian pictures / Margaret Swain.
"Meticulously embroidered pictures that could be framed and displayed formed a part of a girl's education through the Goergian period in Britain (1714-1830). This book shows the variety of subjects and techniques and also glances at the work produced in American schools. As well as schoolgirls, outstanding women like Miss Morritt, Mrs Knowles and Miss Linwood produced large embroidered pictures to simulate paintings, greatly admired at the time, but now totally neglected. Pictorial needlework also adored upholstery, chair seats, screens and wallhangings. This book will be a useful handbook for collectors, museum curators and antique dealers, and an inspiration to the modern needlewoman."--Provided by the publisher.

Liffey ships & shipbuilding / Pat Sweeney.
"This book provides a comprehensive history of the four shipbuilding yards that have operated along Dublin's River Liffey since shipbuilding began there. It begins with the Walpole and Webb shipyard from the early 1830's and documents the progression of the shipbuilding industry in Dublin throughout the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War and the vital part the shipyards played in keeping the neutral Irish merchant fleet operating in order to feed the country during the war - resulting in secret talks with the British navy about building ships in Dublin for the British during the Second World War. The narrative goes up to 1969 and the author then details the efforts that have been made to revive Dublin's shipbuilding industry in more recent years. Includes a 16-page photo section."--from publisher.

A brief history of slavery / Jeremy Black.
"Slavery is as old as the world itself and expert and professor Jeremy Black will show that its history is one that is central to our understanding of the modern world. This essential guide is a new global history of slavery from ancient times to the present day, includes fascinating new insights and interpretations including the role of slavery within Islam, the complicity of some Africans in the transatlantic trade, and will raise key questions about the persistence of slavery today and what our governments are doing about it."--Provided by the publisher.
