Rickmers : a century /by W. Rickmer Rickmers. A history of the Rickmers family and the founding and operation of the Rickmers Firm and Rickmers Line and their shipbuilding operations. Based in Bremerhaven and later Hamburg, and with a reputation for building fast ships, the company moved from building sailing vessels to iron steamships. Illustrated with photographs and plates of their vessels, family members and directors and managers. A list of staff is provided as at the date of publication along with a list of those who died in the First World War. The company is the parent of the London tug company William Watkins Ltd, which was established in 1834. Includes a history of the company during the First and Second World Wars and its subsequent expansion by acquisition of other towing companies. There is an outline of the company's activities and the vessels it operates in various locations. There are also details of barges owned by Alexandra Marine Transportation Ltd, which is responsible for towage and related activities outside the ports. "Over the past four and a half centuries, the magnificent city of Oxford has been mapped for many reasons, few of which have involved the mere finding of one's way through the streets. Maps were produced as part of schemes to defend Oxford from rampaging Roundheads, raging floodwaters, and the ravages of cholera; to plan the new canals and bridges of the eighteenth century and the new railways, tramways and suburbs of the nineteenth; to determine and display changes in the city's political stature under the Reform Acts of 1832 and 1867; to aid police enforcement of the laws against homosexuality; and even to plan a Soviet ground assault on the heart of the British motor industry. Britain's war against the slave trade : the operations of the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron, 1807-1867 /Anthony Sullivan. "Long before recorded history, men, women and children had been seized by conquering tribes and nations to be employed or traded as slaves. Greeks, Romans, Vikings and Arabs were among the earliest of many peoples involved in the slave trade, and across Africa the buying and selling of slaves was widespread. There was, at the time, nothing unusual in Britain's somewhat belated entry into the slave trade, transporting natives from Africa's west coast to the plantations of the New World. What was unusual was Britain's decision, in 1807, to ban the slave trade throughout the British Empire. Britain later persuaded other countries to follow suit, but this did not stop this lucrative business. So the Royal Navy went to war against the slavers, in due course establishing the West Africa Squadron which was based at Freetown in Sierra Leone. This force grew throughout the nineteenth century until a sixth of the Royal Navy's ships and marines was employed in the battle against the slave trade. Between 1808 and 1860, the West Africa Squadron captured 1,600 slave ships and freed 150,000 Africans. The slavers tried every tactic to evade the Royal Navy enforcers. Over the years that followed more than 1,500 naval personnel died of disease or were killed in action, in what was difficult and dangerous, and at times saddening, work. In Britain's War Against the Slave Trade, naval historian Anthony Sullivan reveals the story behind this little-known campaign by Britain to end the slave trade. James Fitzjames : the mystery man of the Franklin Expedition /William Battersby. A biography of James Fitzjames, captain of HMS Erebus and third in command on Franklin's 1845 expedition to find the North West passage. The author established that Fitzjames was the illegitimate son of a diplomat, Sir James Gambier, and was brought up by the Reverend Robert Conningham. Fitzjames joined the Royal Navy in 1825, served on the Euphrates expedition from 1834-37, fought in the Egyptian-Ottoman War (1839-40) as a gunnery lieutenant and then in the First Opium War before joining the Franklin expedition on which he died in 1848.
