Fitzroy : the remarkable story of Darwin's captain and the invention of the weather forecast
A biography of Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865). Joining the navy at the age of 12, Fitzroy became a skilled hydrographer and was given command of the Beagle in 1828. He was famously joined on his second voyage on the Beagle by Charles Darwin. He served as a Member of Parliament for two years, was appointed as Governor of New Zealand in 1843 and on returning to Britain and active naval service in 1845, he developed his interest in meteorology. With the aim of saving lives at sea, he went on to develop the fundamental techniques of weather forecasting, designed a standard barometer and thermometer (a first weather station), invented the system of storm warnings, issued the first daily weather forecasts and became the founding director of the Meteorological Office. He died after committing suicide in 1865.

James Fitzjames : the mystery man of the Franklin Expedition /William Battersby.
A biography of James Fitzjames, captain of HMS Erebus and third in command on Franklin's 1845 expedition to find the North West passage. The author established that Fitzjames was the illegitimate son of a diplomat, Sir James Gambier, and was brought up by the Reverend Robert Conningham. Fitzjames joined the Royal Navy in 1825, served on the Euphrates expedition from 1834-37, fought in the Egyptian-Ottoman War (1839-40) as a gunnery lieutenant and then in the First Opium War before joining the Franklin expedition on which he died in 1848. The author draws on Fitzjames's personal letters and journals as well as official naval records.

Van Diemen's women : a history of transportation to Tasmania /Joan Kavanagh & Dianne Snowden ; foreword by Mary McAleese.
"On 2 September 1845, the convict ship 'Tasmania' left Kingston Harbour for Van Diemen's Land with 138 female convicts and their 35 children. On 3 December the ship arrived in Hobart Town. While this book looks at the lives of all the women aboard, it focuses on two women in particular: Eliza Davis, who was transported from Wicklow Gaol for life for infanticide, having had her sentence commuted from death, and Margaret Butler, sentenced to seven years' transportation for stealing potatoes in Carlow. Using original records, this study reveals the reality of transportation, together with the legacy left by these women in Tasmania and beyond, and shows that perhaps, for some, this Draconian punishment was, in fact, a life-saving measure."--Back cover.

Loss and cultural remains in performance : the ghosts of the Franklin expedition /Heather Davis-Fisch.
"In 1845, John Franklin's Northwest Passage expedition disappeared. The expedition left an archive of performative remains that entice one to consider the tension between material remains and memory and reflect on how substitution and surrogation work alongside mourning and melancholia as responses to loss."--Provided by the publisher.

The Ashburner schooners : the story of the first shipbuilders of Barrow-in-Furness
"Schooners formed the majority of sailing vessels operating out of ports on the West coast of Victorian Britain, and the Ashburner family, the first shipbuilders at Barrow, were amongst their most distinguished builders. This book presents the history of that family and the ships they built, from the launch of Lake Windermere's first passenger steamer in 1845 through until the last schooner ceased trading in 1967. It covers the whole spectrum of their activity - their construction, the coastal and deepwater trades they operated in and the men who built, owned and sailed them. [...] Around the lives of the Ashburners and their ships, the broader subject of Furness sailing ships is also presented. [...] This book will be of interest to the maritime enthusiast, but has been written with minimum of technical jargon, to suit readers interested in Victorian industrial history and the local history."--Provided by the publisher.

Lieut. John Irving, R.N. of H.M.S. Terror, in Sir John Franklin's last expedition to the Arctic regions : a memorial sketch with letters /Benjamin Bell.
This memorial was originally published in 1881 at the request of Irving's father. Born in 1815, Irving was a lieutenant on HMS Terror during Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition to find the North West passage. Found by a search party in 1878, a body was identified as Irving's by a silver medal and was returned to Edinburgh for burial. This memorial contains biographical details of Irving, his letters, details of the various search and rescue attempts, a description of his funeral and a reconstructed chronology of the Franklin expedition compiled by Clements Markham.

Lady Franklin's revenge : a true story of ambition, obsession and the remaking of Arctic history /Ken McGoogan.
A biography of Lady Jane Franklin (1791-1875), born Jane Griffin, who became the second wife of the English explorer Sir John Franklin. A traveller in her own right, she accompanied her husband when he was posted to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) as Lieutenant Governor and became known for her philanthropic work and travels in south-eastern Australia. With her encouragement, Franklin led an expedition to find the North West Passage in 1845 but the lack of news led her to lobby the Admiralty to mount a number of expeditions to ascertain its fate. Her prolific letter writing and circle of influential political contacts helped to ensure that she could raise the support and sponsorship necessary and that the expedition's fate and her husband were not forgotten. Outraged by explorer John Rae's report and the evidence he obtained from local Inuit which indicated both her husband's death and the suggestion that the crew had resorted to cannibalism in order to survive, Lady Franklin launched a campaign to preserve the reputation of and memorialise her husband. She successfully shifted the narrative around the expedition so that the disaster would become publicly understood as a heroic endeavour and her husband celebrated for the apparent discovery of the North West Passage.
