The life of William Denny, shipbuilder, Dumbarton
The biography of William Denny (1847-1887), born in Dumbarton, the eldest son of Peter Denny, partner in the ship building firm of William Denny and Brothers. Chapters focus on aspects of William Denny's life, including his birth and boyhood, apprenticeship, and admission to the firm as a partner. The author also explores Denny's views on industrial questions of the time, his work as a naval architect and his promotion and use of an experimental tank for testing vessel design. Denny worked on the load-line committee and was also known for his philanthropic work. Further chapters consider Denny's religious beliefs, politics, characteristics and family life. Denny was a director of a subsidiary company La Platense Flotilla, formed with the intention of carrying on a goods and passenger business on the River Plate and its tributaries. Denny visited South America to establish this business, but while there and during protracted negotiations with a competitor, he committed suicide. Much of the text consists of extracts from letters written by Denny to his family, friends and associates.

Arctic labyrinth : the quest for the Northwest Passage /Glyn Williams.
"For centuries British navigators dreamed of finding the Northwest Passage - the route over the top of North America that promised a short cut to the fabulous wealth of Asia. We now know that several passages exist, and if climate change continues some may soon be open, but for most of the period of the search they were choked by impassable ice. Knowledge was won only at great cost as expedition after expedition, often in the most terrible conditions, added to patchy and sometimes fatally misleading charts. Arctic Labyrinth tells the extraordinary story with great skill and brilliance. From the tiny, woefully-equipped ships of the first Tudor expeditions to the steam-powered vessels of the Victorian age and the icebreakers of the modern era, Glyn Williams describes how every form of ingenuity was tried in order to break through the ice barriers set across a nightmarish maze of tortuous channels and sterile islands. The heroism, folly and horror of these voyages were almost unbelievable: men suffered and died from scurvy, frost-bite and starvation, entire ships were crushed in the ice - and all in pursuit of a goal that proved futile. Williams's book is an important work of exploration and maritime history, and a remarkable study in human delusion and fortitude."--Provided by the publisher.

Around the coast and across the seas : the story of James Fisher and sons
"James Fisher and Sons is one of the success stories of the British mercantile marine. Ever since its foundation in 1847, the firm has based its fortunes on the short sea and coasting trade although many of its vessels have also sailed to more distant destinations. The book shows how the early history of the firm and its founding family was entwined with the rapid development of Barrow-in-Furness as a port for the export of iron ore in the boom years of the second half of the nineteenth century. When Barrow went into decline as the twentieth century dawned, the firm lost its direction which was regained only with the arrival of the third generation of the family in the shape of Sir John Fisher. A prominent figure in the British shipping industry, he master-minded the fortunes of the business for nearly seventy years and his influence can still be felt today. The book describes not only the story of the ups and downs of the business, Barrow and the Fisher family but also of the contribution made by many others within James Fisher and Sons. [...] The book is well-illustrated, using not only maps and photographs but also numerous examples of the fine paintings held by the firm of Fisher vessels past and present.--Provided by the publisher.

Children at sea : lives shaped by the waves /Vyvyen Brendon.
"Children at sea faced even more drastic separations from loved ones than those sent 'home' from India or those packed off to English boarding schools at the age of seven, the subjects of Vyvyen Brendon's previous books. Captured slaves, child migrants and transported convicts faced an ocean passage leading nearly always to life-long exile in distant lands. Boys apprenticed as merchant seamen, or enlisted as powder monkeys, or signed on as midshipmen, usually progressed to a nautical career fraught with danger and broken only by fleeting periods of home leave. Solitary among numbers, as Admiral Collingwood described himself, they could be not just physically at risk but psychologically adrift - at sea in more ways than one. Rather than abandoning seaborne children as they approached adulthood, therefore, Vyvyen follows whole lives shaped by the waves. She focusses on eight central characters: a slave captured in Africa, a convict girl transported to Australia, a Barnardo's lass sent as a migrant to Canada, a foundling brought up in Coram's Hospital who ran away to sea, and four youths from contrasting backgrounds despatched to serve as midshipmen. Their social origins as well as their maritime ventures are revealed through a rich variety of original source material discovered in scattered archives. These brine-encrusted lives are resurrected both for their intrinsic interest and because they speak for thousands of children, cast off alone to face storms and calms, excitement and monotony, fellowship and loneliness, kindness and abuse, sea-sickness and ozone breezes, loss and hope. This book recounts stories never before told, stories that might otherwise have sunk without trace like so much juvenile flotsam. They are sometimes inspiring, sometimes heart-rending and always compelling."--Provided by the publisher.

John Rae, Arctic explorer : the unfinished autobiography /edited and with an introduction by William Barr.
"John Rae is best known today as the first European to reveal the fate of the Franklin Expedition, yet the range of Rae's accomplishments is much greater. Over five expeditions, Rae mapped some 1,550 miles (1,850 kilometres) of Arctic coastline; he is undoubtedly one of the Arctic's greatest explorers, yet today his significance is all but lost. John Rae, Arctic Explorer is an annotated version of Rae's unfinished autobiography. William Barr has extended Rae's previously unpublished manuscript and completed his story based on Rae's reports and correspondence--including reaction to his revelations about the Franklin Expedition. Barr's meticulously researched, long overdue presentation of Rae's life and legacy is an immensely valuable addition to the literature of Arctic exploration."--
