Robertson (Shipowners) Limited : the history of a Scottish company's coasters and short-sea traders
1851
A history of the Gem Line (William Robertson (Shipowners) Ltd), founded by William Robertson in 1851. The scow Ellen was the first vessel purchased by Robertson in 1852, mainly to carry coal. Robertson expanded into sailing vessels, then steam, and was engaged in the coastal bulk trade of the British Isles. By 1900 the fleet consisted of almost forty vessels. The line was acquired by Powell Duffryn Ltd in 1970. The title includes lists of Scottish companies operating coaster fleets and the yards which built these vessels. A fleet list of sail, steam and motor vessels owned by the company is provided, organized both alphabetically and chronologically.

The flag's up : the first 20 years of the South Head Lookout Post 1790-1809 /Peter Poland.
"English, Dutch, French, American and Russian ships anhjored alongside convict vessels in Sydneys peaceful harbour. they carried Matthew Flinders and other famous navigators; political prisoners, daring escapees, Aborigines and Maoris making their first international journeys, and governors to and from their difficult postings. The South Head Lookout Post which recorded these arrivals and departures has been manned since January 1790, making it the longest permanently manned site in Australia. This illustrated book reveals the first years and the various voyages that began and ended on the shores of the bright young Sydney colony."--Provided by the publisher.

Turner's watercolour explorations 1810-1842 / Eric Shanes.
"One of the largest sections of the Turner Bequest at the Tate Gallery is a group made up of watercolour sketches, early studios for finished works, and finished and unfinished drawings. Although many of the designs appear to be abstract, Turner was not creating non-representational images but was employing a rapid "visual shorthand". These pictures remain among Turner's most popular works. This volume explains the creative process that underlies these images and the interpretive techniques which have been used to analyze them. Many of their subjects are identified and the pictures are arranged according to their subject-matter and historical purpose."--Provided by the publisher.
