The May Flower : a barging childhood /Nick Ardley.
"In this evocative story of his unusual upbringing on the May Flower, Nick Ardley gives us a colourful account of life on the water. He tells tales of places visited, techniques learned and characters met that combine to give a real sense of what sailing can teach us. The skills learned on the water have proved to be highly beneficial for many people in their later careers, while the self-reliance and resourcefulness that often characterises sailors are much-valued attributes anywhere. Weaving his wealth of barging knowledge into the story of his family's life aboard the May Flower and their great resilience in keeping their barge on the water, Nick Ardley has given us a book that will appeal both to barging enthusiasts and those interested in childhood development."--Provided by the publisher.

Puffers and places / Guthrie Hutton
"This new companion volume to the author's Puffers which we published in 2007 and have had to reprint many times since. The subject matter is dear to the author's heart as he is a canal enthusiast and of course puffers worked some of Scotland's canals. While at the BBC he worked on the television series The Vital Spark. He also collects images of puffers assiduously and essentially told us he had found so many previously unseen pictures we had to do a new book. Nobody will be disappointed with the selection here which includes locations such as Crinan, Dunoon, Rothesay, Lochranza, Brodick, Ruchill, Kirkintilloch, Kirkcaldy, Portree, Bowling, Fort Augustus and more. All are accompanied by lengthy and detailed captions."--Provided by the publisher.

The Herschels of Hanover / Michael Hoskin.
An account of the life and family of William Herschel, covering his parents, siblings and children. Gives a short biography of each. Mainly focused on the career of William who was a musician before becoming a royal astronomer to the court of King George III. He had many talents in building instruments, collecting data and applying formal methodologies. One such approach was borrowed from Natural History: that of collected catalogues of specimens and deriving trends within a dataset. With this he studied double stars and nebulea. This was facilitated by the development of increasingly powerful telescopes, covered in this text. He also discovered Uranus and infrared light.

Het Scheepvaartmuseum : een reis het vernieuwde museum = The National Maritime Museum : a journey through the renovated museum /met Nelleke Noordervliet en Thomas Rosenboom.
"How do you give history a facelift? Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the National Maritime Museum, closed its doors in 2007 for an extensive renovation. Writers Thomas Rosenboom and Nelleke Noordervliet watched the renovations up close. They took a trip through time, from the old vaults and arches to the modern roof, and stumbled upon old secrets and new challenges. This documentary shows that the collection of Het Scheepvaartmuseum couldn't wish for a better home than this gem dating from the Golden Age."--Provided by the publisher.

Albert medals awarded to Royal Marines : with particular reference to Marine Albert Streams AM (served 1921-1943). /by Derek Oakley
"The Albert medal was instituted in 1866 and was awarded for supreme gallantry not in the face of the enemy. In 1940, when King George VI introduced the George Cross and George Medal it ceased to be awarded. In 1971 surviving holders of the Albert Medal were allowed to exchange their medals for the George Cross. The first Albert Medal was awarded in 1878 and the last in 1939. [...] The heart of this publication is the story of Marine Albert Streams, who served from 1921 until he was killed on the beaches of Sicily in 1943 when he was MOA to the CO of 41 RM Commando. [...] the King personally presented him with his Albert Medal which he won when the Marines turret of HMS Devonshire blew up in 1929."-- Provided by the publisher. This publication also covers five other medallists and two other associated awards.

The press gang : naval impressment and its opponents in Georgian Britain /Nicholas Rogers.
The press gang, and its forcible recruitment of sailors to man the Royal Navy in times of war, acquired notoriety for depriving men of their liberty and carrying them away to a harsh life at sea, sometimes for years at a time. Nicholas Rogers explains exactly how the press gang worked, whom it was aimed at and how successful it was in achieving its ends. He also shows the limits to its operations and the press gang's need for cooperation from local authorities, who were by no means prepared to support it.--From publisher description.
