Port of London through time / Geoff Lunn.
"Until the middle of the twentieth century, the Port of London was the busiest in the world. A long, slow decline set in, as ships grew larger and numerous seamen's strikes and the advent of containerisation decimated the docks. Everything moved downriver and the Port of Tilbury grew to cope with the demand, while the docks in London itself declined and were closed. Some have been filled in, others converted to other uses, with London City Airport and Canary Wharf being built on converted docklands. Geoff Lunn tells the story of the Port of London, from the Pool of London to Tilbury and Gravesend, using a combination of images, both old and modern. Inside are views of the redevelopment and changing face of the docklands areas."--Back cover.

The Atlantic imperial constitution : center and periphery in the English Atlantic world /Ken MacMillan.
"Drawing on recent trends in both Atlantic and center-periphery literature, this book examines the relationship between the English crown--monarch, privy council, and ancillary bodies--and its Atlantic colonies under the early Stuart monarchs, James I and Charles I, circa 1603-1642. In doing so, it engages directly with a very large body of existing scholarship, and offers a new understanding of this relationships by demonstrating how the English central government became involved in the affairs of its Atlantic peripheries in the first few decades of these activities, and the extent to which this involvement helped to define and determine subsequent imperial relations"--Provided by publisher.

De Ruyter Dutch admiral / ed. by Jaap R. Bruijn ... [et al.].
"Was Michiel de Ruyter the greatest sea commander who ever lived? Or simply the greatest sea-commander of the 17th century? Some people see him as the man who saved the Dutch Republic, and ensured its independence. He knew how to fight a sea-battle on the grandest scale. He could also haggle like a canny Dutch merchant, achieving the release of Hungarian clergymen from Spanish captivity and that of Dutch sailors from barbarian imprisonment. Louis XIV, often his opponent, called him 'a man who did honour to humanity'. In this book, nine leading historical authorities, from seven different countries, examine his astonishing career."-- from publisher.

The quest for Frank Wild / Angie Butler.
A biography of Frank Wild containing Wild's previously unpublished memoirs. During the heroic age of polar exploration, Wild was the only explorer to serve on five expeditions. He accompanied Scott on the British National Antarctic Expedition (Discovery) 1901-1904; Shackleton on the British Antarctic Expedition (Nimrod) 1907-1909, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (Endurance) 1914-1916 and his final expedition on the Quest (1921-22). Wild also accompnanied Mawson on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (Aurora) 1911-14. After the end of the First World War, Wild settled in South Africa where he died in 1939 and the author focuses on this period and the story of the search for Wild's medals and his cremated ashes.

Admiralty Sailing Directions : West coast of Scotland pilot
Elizabeth Carter was a clergyman's daughter and was a poet, linguist and classical scholar who lived at Deal in Kent. This book, published by the Sandwich Local History Society, aims to give a better understanding of her and her life in Deal during the eighteenth century. The author uses her cache of some 500 letters, written to two close friends between 1741 and 1787, to recreate her life and times in a rough seafaring town. There are accounts of her social and domestic activities and descriptions of the town and its environs. The book has 14 plates, mostly in colour, notes and a short bibliography.

Don't shoot the albatross! : nautical myths and superstitions /by Jonathan Eyers.
"Sailors are a notoriously superstitious lot - even if some won't admit it. Years of taking to the water, at the mercy of uncontrollable (and sometimes deadly) forces, have led even the wisest to seek ways of influencing the gods or fate. From bad omens and odd rituals to lucky tokens and forbidden words, the superstitions of the sea are legion. Many of these superstitions have refused to go away and quite a few have entered the general public consciousness. Some are amusing in their own right, others have fascinating origins, whilst for many there are bizarre anecdotal incidents which would appear to lend credence to these arcane beliefs. Illustrated with quirky cartoons, this book explores nautical superstitions from all over the world in an informative yet entertaining way."--Back cover.
