Mersey ports : Liverpool & Birkenhead /Ian Collard.
"The busy River Mersey and its two ports, Liverpool and Birkenhead, have seen great changes in recent years. In Mersey Ports - Liverpool and Birkenhead, Ian Collard charts the developments that have taken place in maritime life on the Mersey, from the 1950s and 1960s through to the present day. Ships of all shapes and sizes have been found on the Mersey, from the old Mersey ferries and the motor ferries that replaced them, to huge passenger liners and container ships. as well as tall ships, tugs and seacats. All of them feature in this detailed photographic history. A host of international shipping companies are represented, including Blue Funnel, ellerman, Harrison and Elder Dempster lines. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. wintered its fleet in Morpeth Dock at Birkenhead, and Princes Landing Stage was once the focal point of activity at the docks, as passenger liners queued to berth."--Provided by the publisher.

Pirates of Barbary / by Adrian Tinniswood.
From the coast of Southern Europe to Morocco and the Ottoman states of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, Christian and Muslim seafarers met in bustling ports to swap religions, to battle and to trade goods and sales - raiding as far as Ireland and Iceland in search of their human currency. Studying the origins of these men, their culture and practices, Adrian Tinniswood expertly recreates the twilight world of the corsairs and uncovers a truly remarkable clash of civilisations. Drawing on a wealth of material, from furious royal proclamations to the private letters of pirates and their victims, as well as recent Islamic accounts, Pirates of Barbary provides a new perspectives of the corsairs and a fascinating insight into what it meant to sacrifice all you have for a life so violent, so uncertain and so alien that it sets you apart from the rest of mankind.

The man who sank Titanic : the troubled life of quartermaster Robert Hichens /Sally Nilsson.
The author of this book is Robert Hichens's great-granddaughter. Hichens was the quartermaster on the Titanic who was given the order 'hard-a-starboard' and thus was the man who was steering the liner when it collided with an iceberg. Less than an hour after the collision Hichens was put in charge of lifeboat six and rowed over 40 passengers to the safety of the Carpathia. Following a dispute with the lifeboat passenger Molly Brown he was branded a coward and a bully, although he was a valuable witness at the inquiries into the disaster. Hichens's life was blighted by the Titanic; his marriage broke down, he drank heavily and in later life he was imprisoned for the attempted murder of a business associate. He died in 1940 while working as third mate on a cargo ship taking coal to Africa. This book aims to give a different view of Hichens and reveal his true character. The author has drawn on unpublished material from the family archive. There are numerous black and white photographs, including one of Hichens at the helm of lifeboat 6, and a short bibliography.

A voyage for madmen / Peter Nichols.
"It lay like a gauntlet thrown down: to sail non-stop around the world. In 1968, no one had ever done it; no one knew if it could be done, until nine ordinary men - six Englishmen, two Frenchmen and an Italian - set out to try. They were neither sportsmen nor yachtsmen - one didn't even know how to sail. Only one of the nine crossed the finishing line after ten months at sea. The rest encountered despair, sublimity, madness and even death."--Back cover.

Rogue docker : a life of crime in Birkenhead docks /Len Burnett.
"In Rogue Docker: A Life of Crime in Birkenhead Docks, Len Burnett unveils the gripping story of his time as a docker in the 1960s and 1970s, how he succumbed to temptation, and the daring exploits that followed. Having witnessed men pilfering all around him for about three years, he eventually joined in, taking objects that he could sneak past the policeman on the gate whisky, cloth, cigarettes and toothpaste. However, after a while he got bored of pocketing small items and moved on to large vans and eventually twenty-ton trailers to remove heavy cargo. Stories of daylight robbery, close shaves and running from the police are related with candour and colour within the pages of this fascinating book. But it wasn t all stealing. Burnett lets the reader into a treasure trove of memories of hard work, poor conditions, working the welt, diverse cargo, and the humour of the men with whom he worked."--Back cover.

Sea wolves : the extraordinary story of Britain's WW2 submarines /Tim Clayton.
Sea Wolves is the story of the crews who bravely manned British submarines in the Second World War. But in the course of these vital operations, the submariners suffered devastating casualties. This is the vivid, thrilling story of the survivors and their promising young comrades who fought with such courage, in the face of the sickening terror of depth-charge attacks and the cold fear of having to escape from a sunken submarine filled with the bodies of close friends.

Traditional fishing boats of Britain & Ireland / Mike Smylie.
"The definitive volume on Britains traditional fishing boats, by the author of Herring: A History of the Silver Darlings. The Coasts of Britain and Ireland are surrounded by some of the most tempestuous waters in the world and are among the most diverse too. For centuries, the inhabitants of these isles have harvested the rich bounty that lay just offshore. As a result of the diverse nature of the coast, each area of the UK and Ireland has developed its own unique fishing craft, ideally suited to its own local environment. Mike Smylie examines the roots and development of each native design. Many illustrations, drawings and diagrams portray the boats in their halcyon days. Mike Smylie introduces us to the background of the once great fishing fleets that sailed British waters and looks at the catches and markets for fish, before setting round the coast describing each fishing boat design, introducing them to the reader, explaining how each design suited its local environment, as well as telling us the story of the fishing industry in each locality."--From the publisher.

The games : Britain's olympic and paralympic journey to London 2012 /Brendan Gallagher.
"The Games traces Britain's great Olympic and Paralympic past through powerful narrative, striking anecdotes and over 250 compelling original images. It captures the individual atmosphere of past Games across the world, from 1930s Berlin to 1980s Moscow, Sydney in the Millennium to Beijing's Birds Nest in 2008, and explores the explosion of interest in the Paralympic Games. London's previous roles as host, rescuing the Games in 1904 after Vesuvius erupted and battling with postwar austerity in 1948, are considered both as contemporaries saw them and from a historical perspective, as are individual stories of British medal winners. The final chapter focuses upon the preparations for London 2012 events, from individual athletes to the radical keynotes of sustainability and regeneration, and shows how London 2012 will both strengthen and refresh Britain's historic Olympic ties."--From publisher.
