MacBrayne steamers / by Alistair Deayton.
An illustrated history of the steamers and ships operated in the West Highlands and Islands of Scotland under the MacBrayne name from 1851 until the end of operations on the Clyde in 1969 and the West Highlands in 1972. The book illustrates the vessels in use throughout the company's history from the period when David MacBrayne became a partner in David Hutcheson & Co in 1851, to the merger of David MacBrayne Ltd with the Caldonian Steam Packet Company and the formation of Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd in 1973. Notable vessels included paddle steamers Columba and Iona, the turbine King George V, which made the trip from Oban to Staffa and Iona for nearly forty years. Later ships included the steamer Lochness, motor vessels Lochearn, Lochmor and Lochfyne, and car ferries Columba, Hebrides and Clansman. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs of the ships and the places they visited, advertising material and timetables.

Steamship operation between Britain and Australia : problems faced by steamship operators /Jacqueline Elston.
"This work examines the effect that mid 19th century steamship development had on long distance trade and communications between Britain and Australia. It takes a holistic approach, drawing together a number of diverse but related themes and using much previously unseen material to challenge many former assumptions. The role of steamships is revealed as engines of imperial ambition with the British Government operating a perfidious double-edged policy; publicly espousing 'free trade' but in practice stifling it with subsidies to favoured steamship companies. This practice was designed to obtain a 'navy on the cheap' but created such disruption to communication with the emerging colonies that the tension erupted in the political press of the day. In addition this study reveals the triumphs and disasters of running a steamship company, namely the Liverpool & Australian Navigation Co who operated Brunel's SS Great Britain, without government subsidies. Steamship companies were crucial to the creation of an import/export market on which the developing colony of Australia was to depend for its growth into a successful modern economy and liberal, democratic society."--Back cover.

A Greenwich canvas and beyond / Margaret Kaye.
This handy companion, a broad-based leisurely foray through two millenia at Greenwich, focuses on the events before and after Canaletto painted, in 1752, the completed Royal Seamen's Hospital fronting the Thames. On the hill behind, the Royal Observatory, built in 1676, provided the very expert astronomy that led to the local time transforming the world: the much revered Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and Longitude Line 0.00º (Prime Meridian). Now the old fishing village and royal estate, 10 Km (6 mi) downriver from central London, is a World Heritage Site displaying spellbinding history, science, and seamanship. It began as a short article about a day out to Greenwich and then snowballed. The result is but a few basic stitches in a titanic tapestry of history, geography, science, astronomy, and maritime endeavour. The dates are included merely as signposts and stepping stones to accompany the reader when wandering through, perhaps in wonderment, two thousand years of events. -- from Amazon.

Thames-side Kent : through time /Anthony Lane.
"Commencing at the Nore, Thames-side Kent follows the course of a ship inward bound, presenting a nostalgic study of the southern bank of the River Thames as far as the county of Kent extends, the mouth of the River Darenth, also known as Dartford Creek. Countless vessels of all sizes have travelled along these thirty-one miles of water over the centuries, some to one of the many wharves that lined the river but the majority to the earlier vast expanse of the London Docks. In spite of a massive expansion of population, the Kent riverside still has remote places and large areas of salt marsh. In contrast, above Gravesend, there has been, and still is, major development through Northfleet to Greenhithe and Dartford, with Bluewater shopping centre and Ebbsfleet station catering for a multitude of shoppers and high-speed rail travellers. Hence the Dartford Bridge and tunnels remain heavily congested but the river above Purfleet stays largely empty of traffic."--Provided by the publisher.

Japanese heavy cruisers : Myoko and Takao classes /Steve Backer.
"The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This volume is devoted to the largest cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Built in defiance of treaty restrictions, they were the fastest and most powerful heavy cruisers of their day, and were heavily engaged in every campaign from Pearl Harbor to the end of the Pacific War."--Provided by the publisher."--Provided by the publisher.

Manchester Liners : an extraordinary story /by Nick Robins.
A history of Manchester Liners, which was created in 1898, with help from Sir Christopher Furness, to demonstrate the viability of the Manchester Ship Canal for liner traffic. From the outset its main area of activity was a seasonal service between Manchester and Montreal and St John, New Brunswick. Eventually the company sent its ships directly into the Great Lakes to load grain for Manchester. By 1980 the company had become a part of the Furness Withy Shipping Division. The book emphasises the role of Manchester Liners and the Manchester Ship Canal Company in creating wealth in north-west England during the 20th century. There are numerous black and white and colour photos, fleet lists and an index of ships' names.

Mawson's forgotten men : the 1911-1913 Antarctic diary of Charles Turnbull Harrisson /edited by Heather Rossiter.
"Charles Turnbull Harrisson (1867-1914) was the only Tasmanian member of Douglas Mawson's legendary Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14. Appointed biologist and artist to the expedition, Harrisson was a gifted writer. His diary of December 1911 to March 1913 records the challenges that faced the 8-man Western Base party landed on a glacier 2000km west of the Main Base, and their heroic achievements in Queen Mary Land. Transcribed and edited by Heather Rossiter, Harrisson's engaging narrative is complemented by his oil and watercolour paintings, pencil sketches made in the field and many photographs. In bringing Harrisson's diary from obscure library storage to published volume, Rossiter honours the daring spirit of these lesser known but equally audacious Antarctic explorers."

Ebb & flow : the story of maritime Lyme Regis /Peter Lacey.
"The sea has shaped Lyme Regis's character, charting the ebb and flow of its fortunes from flourishing port into much-loved seaside resort. Lyme's wealth was founded on the export of wool, its ships returning laden with wine. It has survived a Civil War siege and been battered by storms. Thanks to the Cobb, the ancient stone breakwater that helps protect it, small medieval vessels carrying pilgrims, veterans of the Spanish Armada, smugglers, privateers, West African slavers, fishing boats, coasting colliers, lifeboats and wartime air sea rescue launches, have all taken shelter in its harbour. Ships launched on Lyme's slips once brought back sugar from the West Indies, or traded as far afield as California and Newfoundland. But this book is as much about people as ships: its merchants, captains and crews on whose seamanship Lyme once depended. Peter Lacey's remarkable account of Lyme Regis's maritime history has taken seven years to research and write, and has over 100 illustrations, of whcih soem are in colour and many ahve never been published before."--Provided by the publisher.

Bermuda memorial inscriptions / H.R. & R.C. Tulloch.
"Inscriptions from all the memorials found in the naval, military and historic cemeteries of Bermuda, as well as memorials of sailors, soldiers, airmen, servants, slaves, merchants, mariners, convicts and ambassadors, both local and from overseas from the parish and community cemeteries. The volume also includes short histories of each of the naval, military and historic cemeteries now managed by the Bermuda National Trust. The husband and wife team, Hilary and Dick Tulloch, both come from military and families and were army officers. While resident in Bermuda they noticed that many headstones in the local cemeteries were deteriorating and took it upon themselves to record the inscriptions. Together they have unveiled the mysteries of military abbreviations and deciphered whimsical verses and poignant epitaphs."--from publisher.

The book focuses on the later history of the company after a decline in fortunes during the 1950s. White Funnel fleet ships covered routes throughout the Bristol Channel, including to Lundy Island, the South coast and Isle of Wight, and along the coast of North Wales. Illustrated thoughout with black-and-white photographs of all the fleet vessels, including Westward Ho, Balmoral, Devonia and St Trillo, and contemporary advertising material. Titanic captain : the life of Edward John Smith /G.J. Cooper.
A biography of Edward John Smith (1850-1912), captain of the Titanic. Born in Staffordshire, Smith went to sea at the age of seventeen and rose through the ranks of the merchant navy. He served on both sailing ships and later the steamships of the White Star Line. Given the command of RMS Titanic for her maiden voyage in 1912, Smith, regarded by many as the 'millionaire's captain', was by then White Star's senior commander, admired and trusted by his wealthy passengers. Smith died following Titanic's collision with an iceberg. There are conflicting reports of Smith's actions and behaviour in the evacuation of the ship and of his death. Although open to criticism for his seamanship, Smith was exonerated of blame by both the US and British official inquiries. Perceived by many as a hero for his stoicism and fortitude in the face of disaster, the author also details the campaigns to memorialize his name.
